Huntington Crowns Four Mat Champs
Four Huntington High School wrestlers won weight class championships at last weekend’s Ted Petersen Tournament at Island Trees.
Blue Devil mat stars John Arceri (99 lbs.), Corey Jamison (126), Nick Lupi (220) and Anthony Puca (285) all captured titles. Kyle Mock placed second at 99 lbs. and Brandon Mendez was fourth at 145 lbs.
Arceri topped Mock in the finals by default. Jamison looked strong during a 9-2 decision over Jake Lerner of Plainedge. Lupi toppled Lincoln’s Nik Zicuis in a hard fought battle, 5-3. Puca won a thrilling 2-1 overtime match over Massapequa’s Tim Gungor.
Huntington finished sixth in the team standings with 165.5 points, trailing Plainedge (222.5), Mepham (209), Freeport (203), Massapequa (176.5) and Island Trees (168). The Blue Devils edged Uniondale (144), Farmingdale (143), Bethpage (103), Baldwin (77.5), Lincoln-Rhode Island (76) and Hempstead (36).
The Blue Devils are scheduled to take on league foes Kings Park and Comsewogue this week. The Suffolk League V tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 2 at Islip High School. The Section XI championships are set for February 10-11 at Hofstra University. The New York State tournament will be held February 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
