Blue Devil JV Girls Put Ball in Net

Freshman midfielder Alexandra Koumas and sophomore defender Caitlin Knowles helped power the Huntington High School junior varsity girls’ soccer team to a winning season this past fall.

Coached by Brianne McDonnell, the 21-player team compiled an overall record of 7-3-4. Sophomore Lindsay Sullivan (defense) and freshman Brooke Baade (forward), who led the team in scoring, also played key roles in the squad’s success.

McDonnell said Huntington’s greatest accomplishment was “coming together, not only as teammates, but as friends and together reaching a season goal of 27 team goals.”

Koumas was a standout, controlling the middle of the field and aiding both the offense and defense. “Alex exhibits excellent leadership skills on and off the field,” McDonnell said. “She is one of the hardest workers on the team and is always willing to do what the team needs her to do.”

Knowles proved to be exceptional at shutting down opposing scorers and shined as one of the team’s most committed members. “Caitlin is an outstanding student-athlete role model,” McDonnell said. “She is always willing to work on her game and it shows as she was out rock on defense this season.”

No one player on the Huntington squad was responsible for the team’s winning season. Contributions came from the entire roster. The squad worked well together.

“Great character and personality from each individual allowed for great team chemistry,” McDonnell said. “The girls knew how to work hard and push each other, but they also knew how to have fun.”

Blue Devil Notes: The Blue Devil JV was captained by Koumas, Tyler Burton and Mary Sheehan . . . Huntington went 6-3-3 in league games . . . Sullivan played defense during much of the season, but McDonnell “threw her up top” on offense in the last game and the teenager responded by scoring two goals.
