PTSA Inspires Grateful Hearts at HHS

It was a scene that would touch those of any age. The Huntington High School cafeteria erupted in applause as the school's Parent-Teacher-Student Association introduced an honored guest along with a special opportunity for the teenagers in the building to make a difference on a human level.
Retired United States Army Sergeant Paul Kelly was at the school to bear witness to last week's PTSA sponsored Grateful Hearts letter-writing marathon during lunch periods on Valentine's Day.
"The purpose of the campaign was to invite the students to express their gratitude to a member of the military and thank them for their service in a heartfelt note," said PTSA President Marie Rorke. As is usually the case, Huntington High School students rose to the occasion and offered their support to the brave men and women who have volunteered to defend America in a dangerous world.
"You have no idea how much these folks appreciate the letters you send," Sergeant Kelly told the teenagers. "It really makes a difference." The military retiree said he remembers while serving in Vietnam, that some soldiers would go for weeks without hearing from anyone and it was tough on them.
Huntington High School students enthusiastically penned the missives to the troops. Some wrote a note of thanks for their freedom while others expressed gratitude for the safety and security they enjoy at home. Many personally thanked Sergeant Kelly for his service to the United States. "The sentiments were genuine and heartfelt," Mrs. Rorke said.
The notes will eventually find their way to two U.S. Marine bases. About half the letters will be sent to retired Lt. Col. Rhett B. Lawing of Oceana Virginia Beach. He is the uncle of current Huntington High School students William and Stephen Shivers and Tommy and Meghan Plant. The officer will distribute the notes overseas. The other half will go to L.Cpl. Philip Vallone, Jr. stationed at Camp Leatherman in Afghanistan. He is a friend of the DeSimone family, which is also sending students through the high school.
"Valentine's Day was certainly a beautiful one at Huntington High School," Mrs. Rorke said.
