Allison Mehring's Packed Senior Year

Allison Mehring has been thrown a curve or two over the past four years, but the Huntington High School senior has taken whatever setbacks have come her way in stride. The teenager has enjoyed a very successful experience and is more upbeat today than she's ever been.
Ms. Mehring has been a student in the district since her first day of kindergarten at Flower Hill Primary School. She's come a long way since then, but is still the same hardworking and well-liked young woman that she has always been.
Over the course of the past four years, Ms. Mehring has played with the Blue Devil soccer and lacrosse programs. "I've really enjoyed taking part in the athletic teams," she said. "Unfortunately, my athletic career abruptly came to end as I tore my ACL in a soccer game at the beginning of this school year. I have been doing my best to still be a part of the teams and show them my support."
The teenager is currently enrolled in AP Environmental Science, economics, participation in government, pre-calculus, Spanish V, bible literature and criminal justice. "Luckily, I have a packed senior schedule with some outstanding classes that are all very interesting," Ms. Mehring said.
Teachers enjoy working with the senior and she has taken a liking to them, too. "I'd have to say over the past four years my favorite teacher is without a doubt Mr. [Edward] Florea," Ms. Mehring said. "Having him as a sophomore, he always managed to make chemistry so interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed showing up to his class every day."
Ms. Mehring has participated in high school extracurricular activities and considers it to have been time well spent. "Being part of the Natural Helpers club all four years of high school has definitely been a memorable experience," she said about the organization that trains students to help each other and themselves. "The retreats each December were always something I enjoyed looking forward to every year. Mr. [Robert] Gilmor, who runs this club, has made my experience in Huntington High School so memorable. He is such an inspiration to me and he has truly made my high school experience unforgettable."
While Ms. Mehring has applied to a number of colleges, her plans are not yet finalized. "I'm still waiting to hear back from most of them," she said. "My major is undecided, for I'm unsure of what I'd like to do for a career. Starting with an undecided major gives me the opportunity to find what I'm passionate for without having to rush into decisions and choices."
As the Class of 2013 looks ahead toward graduation, Ms. Mehring offered a few insightful words to next year's ninth grade class. "As for incoming freshmen, my advice would be to enjoy the time you have now, because high school flies by like the snap of your fingers," she said. "Don't wish to be older because before you know it you'll blink and you'll be at your own graduation!"
