The Huntington High School wrestling team pinned its way past host Bellport, 56-24. The Blue Devils received stellar performances from their stars, including John Arceri (99 lbs.), who won by technical fall over Austin Gross, 18-3.
Huntington's Kyle Mock (106 lbs.), Corey Jamison (132 lbs.), Brandon Mendez (145 lbs.), John Mallouk (160 lbs.), and Nick Lupi (220 lbs.) all pinned their way to victory. Jorge Villela captured a 10-4 decision at 138 lbs. Joseph Puca (152 lbs.) and Anthony Puca (285 lbs.) both won by forfeit.
Winning Streak Snapped
The Huntington High School girls' basketball team's four-game winning streak was snapped at Copiague when the Eagles upended the Blue Devils, 44-34.
Huntington fell behind early and trailed at halftime, 19-12. Copiague went on to outscore the Blue Devils in the second half, 25-22 to secure the victory.
Joellen Ceide led Huntington with 11 points. Heather Forster dropped in nine points and Raynisha Witherspoon added six. Mackenzie Maloney had five points and Caitlin Knowles contributed three points.
Booster Club Summer Camps
The Huntington Booster Club is finalizing an exciting summer camp program that will include several new offerings. The camps are designed to meet the interests and needs of local youth. Huntington physical education teacher and athletic coach Timothy Madden is coordinating the summer camp program for the Booster Club. Details are expected to be released soon. Camp brochures will be posted on the Huntington School District's website at www.hufsd.edu.
Blue Devil Wrestling in Post-Season
The Huntington High School wrestling team will participate in the Suffolk League V wrestling tournament at Islip High School on Saturday, February 2 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wrestling will continue uninterrupted throughout the day. The semi-finals are slated for 2 p.m. with the consolations following at 4 p.m. The finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Admission is $6.
The Section XI championships are set for Sunday and Monday, February 10-11 at Hofstra University. Wrestling will start on Sunday at 10 a.m. The quarterfinals are scheduled for 5 p.m. Admission is $6. The semi-finals are slated for 10:30 a.m. on Monday. The finals will be held at 4 p.m. There will be separate $6 admissions for the morning and late afternoon sessions on Monday.
Football Team Dinner
The Huntington High School football program will host its annual dinner on Wednesday, February 27 at 6 p.m. in the large cafeteria at the high school. A large turnout of players, parents and family members are expected to attend. The Blue Devil coaching staff will speak about the season and present a long list of awards to the top players.
H-ton Wrestlers are Ranked
Five members of the Huntington High School wrestling team are currently ranked in the top four in their respective weight class in Suffolk Division I. Nick Lupi is ranked first at 220 lbs. and Anthony Puca is No. 2 at 285 lbs. John Arceri is ranked third at 99 lbs. Corey Jamison (126 lbs.) and Brandon Mendez (145 lbs.) are both ranked fourth at their respective weights.
Blue Devils Win at Home on Mat
The Huntington High School wrestling team won its final dual meet of the season in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium battling past visiting Sayville, 40-29.
The Blue Devils received pins from Kyle Mock (2:59) and John Arceri (1:28). Tyshon Parker (10-3), Will Thomas (18-4), Corey Jamison (9-2), Brandon Mendez (3-2), JP Puca (7-2) captured decisions. Nick Lupi and Anthony Puca won by forfeit.
The victory improved Huntington's record in Suffolk League V to 6-1. The team will wrestle in the league tournament at Islip High School on Saturday.
Reilly Nets 21 for HHS
Deer Park topped the Huntington High School boys' basketball team in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium, 66-51. The Blue Devils hung tough with the Falcons during the opening minutes of the game, grabbing an 18-15 first quarter lead. Deer Park regained the advantage by halftime, 29-24.
The Falcons, who are one of the top teams in Suffolk this winter, put the game away in the second half, outscoring Huntington, 37-27. Patrick Reilly led the Blue Devils with 21 points. Keirnan McGovern and Devon Nelson each scored 12 points.
Famed wrestling coach Lou Giani attended the game in the gym named after him.
Early Lead Fades
The Huntington girls' basketball team burst out of the starting gate strong, building an 11-4 lead at Deer Park. The Falcons rallied in the second quarter with an 18-9 run to gain the edge by halftime, 22-20.
The Blue Devils fell further behind in the second half as Deer Park outscored the visitors, 23-20. Huntington was led by Raynisha Witherspoon, who scored 18 points. Mackenzie Maloney added seven points and Katie Nugent dropped in another five.
