Trustees Approve Establishment of Two New Scholarships
Huntington School Board members have approved two requests to establish new scholarship funds. One scholarship will be awarded to a senior while the other is designated for a junior.
Mr. Michael Nathan of Appliance World, located on New York Avenue in Huntington village, asked for permission to establish a scholarship for a college-bound senior. "We are thinking of offering a $500 scholarship to a student who has demonstrated outstanding service at the local, state or national level," Mr. Nathan wrote in a letter to Assistant Superintendent Sam Gergis.
"Appliance World prides itself on helping the community in any way possible and we would like to offer this scholarship to a student who demonstrates our similar values," Mr. Nathan said.
Trustees also approved a request by the We Are Many Foundation to establish a scholarship fund. The organization plans to award a $1,500 scholarship to a Huntington High School junior.
"The We Are Many Foundation helps, heals and educates society concerning children who have been sexually victimized as well as adults who struggle in their current life from the horrific ordeal they experienced when it was done to them in their youth," states the organization's mission statement.
"The scholarship is open to all juniors who will be attending/enrolling in post-high school education, [including] college and/or trade schools in the 2014/15 school year," according to information the organization presented to district officials.
Applicants must submit an essay of at least two to three pages on "abuse in society." The essay must include the effect abuse has had on the individual as well as the societal effects of such abuse.
"There are many different forms of abuse, i.e. sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, bullying, etc.," according to the group. "The essay should also contain what steps can be taken to reduce these abuses in society." Applicants must address at least three forms of abuse in their essay.
A selection committee will review all essays and select the scholarship recipient. The scholarship will be awarded at the five-mile Run for the Many on September 7. The race will be run from the Flower Hill School grounds.
Essays must be postmarked no later than June 5 and sent to: We Are Many Foundation, PO Box 5313, Hauppauge, NY 11788. The winner will be notified by August 15.
