Huntington Students Commended by National Merit

Two more Huntington High School students have earned honors in the 2013 National Merit scholarship program. Daniel Gallagher and Ari Moskowitz have officially been "commended," placing them among the top seniors out of more than 1.5 million participants in the nationwide academic competition.

The highly regarded National Merit program honors 50,000 exceptional American seniors. Huntington Superintendent James W. Polansky praised the two "commended" students for their "outstanding performance" on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and for their academic efforts over all.

It had previously been announced that Huntington senior Alexis Weitzner qualified as National Merit semi-finalist, placing the teenager among the top 16,000 seniors nationwide.

Semi-finalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition which will culminate in the naming of 15,000 National Merit finalists in February 2013. Finalists will begin being notified next March if they have been selected to receive one of 8,300 financial scholarship awards. There are about 22,000 high schools in the United States.

Messrs. Gallagher and Moskowitz and Ms. Weitzner, along with Huntington's AP scholars, will be recognized at a special breakfast in their honor at the high school, Principal Carmela Leonardi said. Parents, guidance counselors, administrators and some of the student's teachers are expected to attend.
