Huntington's College Office
Starts to Hum
Huntington High School's College Office is always a hotbed of activity and the opening days of the new school year have been no exception to that rule.
By the second day of classes last Thursday, three dozen colleges had already established dates for visitations with current year seniors in Huntington's college office. "Colleges have been calling all day long to schedule appointments so there are sure to be many additions," said Bernadette Walsh, a high school guidance counselor who heads the College Office.
College visitations are held in the College Office throughout the school day and are typically scheduled to last one period or about 40 minutes. "Seniors are welcome to meet with the admission counselors, but must sign up in the College Office with guidance secretary Linda Catalano at least a day beforehand."
Huntington High School students have traditionally displayed high rates of participation in the visitation program. "These visits are an opportunity for interested seniors to learn about the colleges, ask questions regarding majors, campus life, scholarships and financial aid and the application process," Mrs. Walsh said.
The college representatives come armed with a variety of brochures and guides and are able to answer whatever questions the Huntington seniors pose. "Usually the admission counselor who visits with the students will also be the same admission counselor to read their college applications, thus this is a fantastic opportunity to make a personal connection with the admission office," Mrs. Walsh said.
Colleges already scheduled to visit include Towson University, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, University of New Haven, Polytechnic University of NYU, University of Vermont, Lasell College, University of Pennsylvania, Hollins University, SUNY Alfred State, Providence College, SUNY Buffalo, Elon University, Monmouth University, Johnson State College, St. Bonaventure University, Adelphi University, Fisher College, Muhlenberg College, Sacred Heart University, University of Maryland-Baltimore, Stevenson University, Castleton College, Alfred University, SUNY Geneseo, Roanoke College, Cazenovia College, Wheaton College, University of Bridgeport, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Boston University, St. John's University, University of Richmond, George Washington University, Lehigh University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Manhattanville College and the University of Hartford.
The visitation list continues to grow. Updated visitation schedules will be posted on the Huntington School District's website at www.hufsd.edu.
