Freshman Sophia Latt Paces
JV Girls' Tennis
Huntington freshman Sophia Latt compiled a 9-1 mark in No. 1 singles to help pace the Blue Devil junior varsity girls' tennis team to a 5-3 record in Suffolk League II play and 5-5 overall.
Coached by Eric Mininni, the 11-player team also received strong performances from freshman singles player Caroline Petrozzo, who won 8-of-10 matches and the No. 1 doubles duo of Allison Minoff and Hillary Hardart, sophomores who went 7-3 this fall.
Latt was sensational for the Blue Devils. "Sophia has real potential to not only make varsity next year, but to be a key contributor," Mininni said. "Besides having great skills, she is willing to work to become better and is a real coachable kid."
Petrozzo was another of Huntington's standouts. "Caroline is an easygoing kid, but once she gets on the court, she's a fierce competitor," Mininni said.
The Blue Devils' top doubles tandem was also formidable. Minoff was a newcomer to the team, but quickly turned into a potent force. Hardardt, who Mininni called the "heart and soul of the team," co-captained Huntington along with sophomore Hailey Giordano.
The highlight of the season came in a rematch with Walt Whitman, which had defeated the Blue Devils in the two teams' first meeting of the fall. "The girls knew it was an important game for us and they came out and gave it their all," Mininni said. Huntington nipped the Wildcats, 4-3.
