HHS 2012 Salutatorian Settles
into Colgate
Justin LoScalzo has always been a "can-do" kind of guy. So, when Huntington High School's Class of 2012 salutatorian packed his bags and left home for his freshman year at Colgate University, his old teachers were certain he would embrace a new set of challenges and opportunities. He's done just that.
"I am really enjoying my first semester at Colgate," Mr. LoScalzo said earlier this week. The teenager is enrolled in an interesting slate of courses, including Politics and Moral Vision, Introduction to Economics, Challenges of Modernity and Political Parties and Election Procedures."
When not in class or studying, Mr. LoScalzo keeps busy with a host of activities. He plays on Colgate's Ultimate Frisee team and is a member of Model United Nations, the jazz band and the college's Habitat for Humanity chapter.
Mr. LoScalzo has also signed onto Colgate's Sidekicks program, "where they match elementary school students with Colgate students and they act as a big brother or sister," he said. "The great thing about the program is that you stay with the kid you are matched with for four years to help them mature and grow."
This week, Mr. LoScalzo once again finds himself busy. "I am currently in the process of applying for doing a semester in Washington D.C. for next year," he said. "The program offered would have me take three classes in D.C. and participate in an internship. The internship would allow me to intern in one of various government departments, possibly the Department of Justice, for a congressman or even an executive department in the White House."
During his years at Huntington High School, Mr. LoScalzo played key roles in a whole host of initiatives and organizations. He was one of the integral members of the student committee that coordinated the school's first Relay For Life last spring.
