Huntington Sets Budget Development Calendar
With New York's strict tax cap and along with increases in pension and health insurance costs looming large, the Huntington School District, like districts across New York, will soon be entering another difficult budget development process that will culminate in a May 21 public vote.
Central office administrators have shared a budget development calendar with Huntington School Board members. It outlines the timeline that will be used during creation of the 2013/14 financial plan.
The calendar includes the following dates:
October 15
• Budget worksheets distributed to principals, directors and central administration.
November 26
• Deadline for submission of budgets to business office.
• Staffing parameters distributed to principals and directors.
December 21
• Elementary staffing projections due to Human Resources.
January 7-18
• Principals present their budget to central office officials.
February 15
• Working budget presented to Huntington Board of Education.
March 1
• Staffing tallies (Huntington High School/Finley Middle School) to be delivered to the superintendent.
March 4
• Huntington School Board meeting: Overview of budget for Board of Education, central administration and transportation.
March 11
• Huntington School Board meeting: Overview of employee benefits, debt service, inter-fund transfer and capital projects
March 18
• Huntington School Board meeting: Overview of instruction and staffing
• Last day for voter propositions to be placed on the ballot.
April 1
• Huntington School Board meeting: Overview of revenues and overall budget review.
April 15
• Huntington School Board meeting: Adoption of budget.
May 6
• Public hearing on budget at Jack Abrams School at 7:30 p.m.
May 21
• Budget vote by residents at Huntington High School from 6 a.m.–9 p.m.
Each of the budget meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m. and be held in the Jack Abrams School auditorium on Lowndes Avenue in Huntington Station. The public is welcome to attend and will be given an opportunity to address trustees.
