Memorial Playground
Fundraising Begins

An effort to raise monies to fund the establishment of a memorial playground in honor of Washington Primary School third grader Victoria Gaines, who lost her life after the boat she was riding in capsized in Oyster Bay last summer, has kicked off.

Organizers of the campaign hope to raise enough money to dedicate the playground next spring. “During all PTA events this year, look for special fundraisers to help us raise money for this goal,” states a flyer announcing the initiative.

Ms. Gaines was among the 27 adults and children aboard the 34 foot, 1984 Silverton cabin cruiser when it sank off of Lloyd Neck last July 4 at about 10 p.m. following a fireworks show. Two other children also lost their lives in the disaster.

Those willing to help with the playground fundraising campaign are asked to contact Washington parent Debra Geller at debra_michel@yahoo.com. Checks should be made payable to HHS Student Government and sent to the Washington PTA c/o Washington Primary School, 78 Whitson Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746.

The Washington School community was devastated when it heard of the tragedy that befell Ms. Gaines, who was a popular student and classmate. Every cent raised in the ongoing campaign will be used to purchase and install the new playground equipment. The initiative aims to perpetuate Ms. Gaines’ memory in a practical way.
