Michael Sullivan Settles into Albany

Michael Sullivan is immersed in school, sports and campus life at the University at Albany. The Huntington High School Class of 2012 member is enrolled in a full schedule of courses and playing on the college’s club volleyball team, too.
“Everything is going great,” Mr. Sullivan said about his first semester. “College is a blast.” The Huntington alum is a business major, but he’s considering a double major that will include economics. He arrived on the Albany campus with a substantial number of college credits thanks to the multitude of Advanced Placement classes he completed at Huntington High School.
“I’ll be considered a sophomore by the end of this semester,” Mr. Sullivan said. “The combination of social studies AP courses is allowing me the opportunity to declare a minor in history that is only six credits away from being complete.”
Mr. Sullivan is enrolled in psychology, macro-economics, English, Greek archeology, business law and constitutional law classes. The English course is an intensive writing class focused upon “growing up in America,” the Huntington grad said. “None of these classes I can really complain about. They are all in some way interesting.”
While there is no NCAA men’s volleyball team at Albany there is a D-I club squad. “We still receive some funding from the school,” Mr. Sullivan said. “Based on our tournament record we have the opportunity to compete in the regional, East Coast and national tournaments. We have played a non-club program before as well.”
The Albany volleyball team has also participated in several pre-season tournaments and performed quite well. “Hopefully, this success will continue into the season, which starts in the second semester,” Mr. Sullivan said. “I’m pretty excited for the season to begin. If we qualify, the team gets to fly down to Dallas during spring break to compete in the national tournament.”
The Huntington grad has comfortably settled into Albany and is enjoying his time on the campus. “As a whole the college experience is everything that I thought it would be and more,” Mr. Sullivan said. “I have gotten to meet new people and become involved with the school. The central location of Albany has provided me with the opportunity to easily visit friends at other schools and also have friends come and stay for the weekend. I am truly enjoying college so far.”
Mr. Sullivan was one of the top members of his class at Huntington High School. He was a member of the Blue Devil varsity volleyball and swimming teams, serving as captain of both squads as a senior. He qualified for the county swimming championships in two events and regularly earned New York State scholar-athlete honors.
“I can’t wait to stop in during winter vacation and support my Blue Devils,” Mr. Sullivan said.
