Possible Capital Projects Identified at Jefferson School

A set of needed capital projects has been identified at Jefferson Primary School on Oakwood Road in Huntington. The building has served thousands of students since it opened in 1962 and Huntington School District officials hope to keep it in fine working order for many years to come.

The district updates its five-year capital plan annually, affixing an estimated price tag to each project. The work at Jefferson is identified in the most recent "facility estimated expenses form," which was finalized on October 17.

District voters approved spending $215,000 to replace the original in-ground oil tank at Jefferson. Due to favorable pricing, the job was completed for $135,313. Two other projects are currently in the works, including the installation of new building access controls ($10,000) and replacement of the school's electronic security system ($15,000).

Several additional needs have been identified and are included in the district's five-year capital plan, including replacement of asbestos floor tiles ($235,200), renovation of the school's roadway and parking lot ($443,000), replacement of the Jefferson clock system ($70,000), restoration and re-crowning of the athletic field, replacement of stage wiring ($26,000), replacement of interior doors and related hardware ($40,000) and accessibility improvements related to the Americans with Disabilities Act ($180,000)

Huntington has been making improvements to each of its eight buildings for many years, utilizing existing budget monies through a capital reserve fund authorized by voters. This practice has helped eliminate the need for borrowing and for subsequent interest expenses.
