UNC Perfect for Huntington's
Kaja Coraor
Kaja Coraor was one of the most academically accomplished members of Huntington High School's Class of 2012. She's already on her way toward achieving the same result in college.
The teenager hasn't missed a single beat in her first semester at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Everything's going great here," Ms. Coraor said. "UNC is really the perfect university for me and I am so happy to be here."
The Huntington alum joined UNC's Carolina Actuarial Student Organization, which is "perfect for me since I'm interested in becoming an actuary," Ms. Coraor said. There are also clubs for anything else you could possibly imagine: dancing, animal rights, community service, even skydiving! And everyone here is so friendly!"
As a high school senior, Ms. Coraor won the Huntington Fire Department's Honorary Chief Raymond Mazoyer Award for Excellence in Economics. She is majoring in economics and mathematical decision science.
As might be expected at one of America's top universities, courses require a good amount of work. "The classes are challenging and I am definitely learning a great deal, but there are also countless opportunities to have fun," Ms. Coraor said. "We have our football games and our famous basketball games, as well as our university traditions like Halloween on Franklin Street. And there are so many clubs on campus!"
Ms. Coraor, a two-time national champion in whitewater canoe and kayak slalom for her age group, is enrolled in English, computer programming and lifetime fitness classes, as well as two economics courses and a class on fairy tales. "I've been doing well in all my classes," she said. "The class on fairy tales is actually the most interesting, in my opinion, because we're comparing fairy tales from various cultures at various points in time and examining their impact on the perceptions of childhood."
