French Honor Society Celebrates
New Members

La Société Honoraire du Francais is one of Huntington High School's proudest organizations. The group inducted 11 new members during a late spring ceremony that featured a musical interlude, a beautiful song, some fancy rhetoric and several timeless traditions.

The French honor society is led by faculty advisor Deirdre Mayer. She is serious about her craft and takes joy in celebrating the achievements of her top students. This year's induction festivities shifted from their normal home in school cafeteria to Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the Spanish and Italian honor society inductions.

The new inductees include Lauren Bialkowski, Joellen Ceide, Allegra DePasquale, Marc Feldman, Kathryn Ingle, Brianna Kirkland, Samantha Lai, Olivia Lopez, Alexandria Mandriota, Ben Nikodem and Summer Rudish.

The national French honor society (SHF) mandates that students must have an A average in French class during the semester of their selection and at least a B average in all other courses. The organization requires all members to perform community service.

Each student was called in French to light a candle by a current society member. The teenagers were later presented with membership pins and certificates. During the induction ceremony, Ms. DePasquale read her poem, A Mon Amour (To my Love), which won first place at level three in this year's Long Island Language Teachers Assn. poetry competition.

The new society members are expected to work hard along with the group's continuing members to continue the organization's sponsorship of the Kevin Sze Memorial Scholarship. Each year the SHF awards a $1,600 scholarship in Mr. Sze's memory to a graduating senior who has overcome a significant obstacle.

"The scholarship will be in its fifth year next year and is funded principally by the efforts of French honor society members," Mrs. Mayer said.
