The Huntington High School junior varsity boys' tennis team finished the spring season with a league record of 7-1, 9-2 overall. The 16-player squad was coached by Robert Gilmor III.
The Blue Devils' two losses came at the hands of Smithtown East (4-3) and Half Hollow Hills West (7-0). Huntington avenged the March loss to Smithtown East later in the season when the Blue Devils earned a 5-2 victory in a rematch.
Fall Coaching Appointments
Huntington School Board members have approved three additional fall season coaching appointments, including Shawn Anderson (head coach, varsity boys' cross country), Steve Muller (head coach, varsity football) and Ronald Wilson (assistant coach, varsity football).
Kevin Zaharios was appointed for the fall and spring seasons to work as the high school speed, strength and conditioning coach.
A.D. Thanks School Board
Georgia D. McCarthy, the Huntington School District's director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics thanked "the board of education and the administration for their continued support of the athletic program," during the 43rd annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet earlier this month.
"Your support keeps a wide variety of student-selected opportunities available for all and these are a vital part of their education," Mrs. McCarthy said.
Casey Scully Graduates from Iona
Casey Scully, a 2008 Huntington High School alum earned her fourth Iona College varsity letter this past spring after scoring 35 goals and adding five assists for the Gaels' women's lacrosse team. The former Blue Devil great graduated in May and is currently residing and working in New York City.
The 5'6 Scully played midfield for Iona. This spring she started all 16 games for Iona, which finished 9-7. Scully won All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference First Team honors.
Scully enjoyed a fabulous senior season, taking 78 shots, including 62 on goal, picking up 22 ground balls, winning 35 draw controls and causing 14 turnovers. She continued her aggressive style of play, being called for 20 fouls.
During her Iona career, Scully played in 64 games, scored 103 goals, contributed 22 assists, took 238 shots (177 on goal), scooped up 107 ground balls, won 104 draw controls and caused 48 turnovers.
At Huntington, Scully starred on the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. She captained all three sports as a senior. She was named All-County in lacrosse, All-Conference in soccer and All-League in basketball.
Johnson to Compete in Junior Olympics
Tyriek Johnson, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2012, has qualified for the 46th annual USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics at Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University campus in Baltimore, Maryland from July 23-29.
The event bills itself as "the most visible youth athletic development program in the world. Many of today's Olympic stars began their track and field careers competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships."
Johnson qualified for the national event by winning the 110m high hurdles and long jump in the Region I meet at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. He ran a personal best of 14.34 seconds to win the hurdles and jumped 21'8 to capture the long jump.
"He's really excited about competing in the National Junior Olympics," said Ronald Wilson, Huntington High School's track and field head coach. "We are very proud of him and his accomplishments.
Johnson is headed to Farmingdale State College in the fall to continue his studies and compete on the Rams' track and field team.
