Finley Girls' Lax-White Full of Pride
Good solid play is what the J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls' lacrosse-white was all about this past spring. Coached by Linda Costello-Roth and former Huntington great Kailene Abt, the Falcons were a highly competitive squad, finishing with a 6-3-1 mark.
The 25-player team was captained by Irina DeSimone, Katie Keys, Julia Macedonio and Victoria Martin. Finley played hard and went after its foes with a noticeable gusto, but showed a degree of sportsmanship that was complimented by referees and opposing coaches.
"The four captains took on their leadership roles with seriousness," Costello-Roth said. "They 'lifted as they climbed.' They took pride in their teammates' accomplishments. I received comments on how several of the more skilled players took the time to provide instruction and encouragement to those new to the game."
With only seven eighth graders lost to "graduation," the team will return 18 players next spring. "We're looking forward to a very strong team next year," Costello-Roth said.
