The Blue Devil wrestling team won a narrow victory in the 43rd annual Huntington High School Holiday Tournament earlier this month. Huntington edged Massapequa by five points in the team score, 223-218. Five other teams trailed in the standings.

Six Huntington wrestlers won weight class championships including Kyle Mock (99 lbs.), John Arceri (106), Corey Jamison (126), Brandon Mendez (152), Nick Lupi (220) and Anthony Puca (285). Blue Devil wrestlers Carlos Pereira (132), Joe Puca (145) and John Mallouk (160) finished in second place. Jonathan Canas (182), Oscar Romero (220) and Joe Sallitto (285) placed sixth in their respective weight class.

Final team scores: 1. Huntington-223; 2. Massapequa-218; 3. Kings Park-216; 4. Northport-195; 5. Port Jervis-129; 6. Center Moriches-111; 7. Grand Street Campus (NYC)-84.

H-ton Field Hockey Battles Cancer

The Huntington High School field hockey team raised $616 during October for the American Cancer Society through the Coaches vs. Cancer program. The Blue Devils held a car wash and a bake sale, head coach Kathy Wright said.

Lewis Sets Shot Put Record

The Huntington High School boys' winter track team looked strong at crossover meet last weekend at Suffolk West-Brentwood. Senior Shaheem Lewis finished second in the shot put with a throw of 50'4.5, a new Blue Devil indoor record. The mark had previously been held by Trayvon Toney, who threw 49'10.75 last winter.

Sophomore Sondy Jean-Baptiste won the high jump with a leap of 5'10 while junior Josh Watkins (5'3) placed fourth, and freshmen Jahmik Curry and Infinite Tucker tied for seventh with leaps of 5-feet.

Junior Y'Majesty Allen enjoyed another great day, placing second in 300m dash in 38.10 and seventh in the 600m dash in 1:32. Teammate Thomas Boisclair placed among the top ten in the 300m dash in 40.43 and was second in the 600m dash in 1:31. Watkins rounded out the Blue Devil effort in the 600m dash by crossing the line fourth in 1:32.

In the 55 meter dash, junior Giancarlo Puello ran 7.56 while teammates, Anthony Fischer (7.64), Anfernee Lopez (7.60), Tucker (7.64) and Anthony Ruggieri (8.92) also sprinted to the finish line. Junior Nick Sherman returned to action in the distance events by running 5:18 in the 1600m to place among the top half of the field.

Huntington's freshmen hurdlers continued to show improve. Freshman Exayvian Crowell placed fourth in the 55m hurdles in 9-seconds flat while freshman teammate Jamik Curry ran 10.43 to place in the top 15.

In the 1000m run, freshmen Kyle O'Brien (3:05) and Victor Tellez (3:10) enjoyed very respectable efforts.

The Great Ben Kocis

Ben Kocis enjoyed a fabulous season as the Huntington High School football team's quarterback. The Blue Devil junior completed 96-of-166 passes for 1,715 yards and 16 touchdowns. He threw just three interceptions and none after September 22. Kocis also rushed 35 times for 269 yards and five touchdowns.

Copiague too Much for Blue Devils

The Huntington girls' basketball team just didn't hit enough shots to overcome feisty Copiague as the Eagles grabbed a 50-44 victory in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.

Copiague led 17-12 after the first quarter and 25-23 at halftime. The Eagles eventually extended their lead to nine points in the second half at the Blue Devils were unable to fight their way back. Copiague outscored Huntington in the second half 25-21.

Raynisha Witherspoon led the Blue Devils with 21 points. Heather Forster added nine points and Caitlin Knowles dropped in six. Joellen Ceide, Emma Hughes, Katie Nugent and Ellyn Byrnes combined for another eight points.

The Booster Club Spirit Night game drew a crowd of about 150, including Superintendent James W. Polansky, Assistant Superintendent Sam Gergis and former Huntington Booster Club President Barbara Cutrone.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in league play.
