Huntington Schools on Social Media
The use of social media has exploded across the world and the Huntington School District is now making increased use of the opportunities that come with such technology.
The district has long been on the web with what it likes to think is one of the premier school websites in the state, if not the country. The site, www.hufsd.edu typically grows over the span of a school year to 15,000 pages, 10,000 photos and hundreds of audio and video files.
While traffic to the website continues to grow, district officials have decided to add Facebook and Twitter pages to its outreach efforts. The new initiative kicked off earlier this month and news of it is still making its way around town.
"Communication is critical in any community," Superintendent James W. Polansky said. "The school district community is no different. In this age of technology and social media, it makes sense for us to make productive use of all channels at our disposal."
Facebook and Twitter will allow the district to reach out to the community via new platforms. Some folks find it easier to access Facebook and Twitter accounts from their handheld devices compared to websites, which by their very nature are "bulkier" and much more complicated to navigate through.
To find the Huntington School District's Twitter page go to www.twitter.com/hufsd. The district hopes to build a base of several hundred, if not several thousand, Twitter followers.
To find the Huntington School District's Facebook page, copy and paste this link into your browser: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Huntington-Union-Free-School-District/566089583408611. The number of page subscribers is growing every day.
The district has established Facebook posting guidelines. A copy of the guidelines can be found on the district's website and on the Facebook page itself. The guidelines make clear that posters will be held to a high standard.
"It is our hope that school community members will seize the opportunities to subscribe to our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter in an effort to remain as updated and as informed as possible on district happenings," Mr. Polansky said.
