Blue Devil Boys' BB Splits Opening Pair
The Huntington High School boys' basketball team took third place in last weekend's King Park Tip-off basketball tournament sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, which was held in honor of former Blue Devil and Commack coach Mike Schmitz, who passed away last summer.
Huntington topped Lynbrook in the consolation round game, 52-50. The Blue Devils opened a 13-10 first quarter lead and held a 29-25 halftime advantage. Lynbrook rallied to tie the game at 40-40 after three quarters.
Patrick Reilly led the Blue Devils with 16 points. Kiernan McGovern pumped in 12 points and Devon Nelson added 11. Connor Birchard and Kevin Montefusco added nine and four points, respectively. Birchard had two 3-pointers and McGovern nailed one from downtown.
Huntington dropped the opening round game in the tournament to East Islip, 56-37. The Blue Devils led 20-18 at halftime before the Redmen went on a 38-17 second half run to put the game away.
McGovern led Huntington with 15 points. Birchard and Reilly contributed seven points each. Alex Castillo and Montefusco and Alex Castillo had three points each. Nelson had two points.
Veteran high school hardcourt mentor Brian Carey is Huntington's head coach.
