Ziegler Leads Blue Devil JV Tennis

When it was good, it was really good. The Huntington High School junior varsity girls' tennis team closed out the fall campaign with a 6-3 league mark under head coach Eric Mininni.

Huntington's players won 41-of-42 individual matches during the Blue Devils' six wins, completely dominating play. "It is a great group of girls who really enjoy the sport," Mininni said. "As time goes on, I feel they will improve and make Huntington girls' tennis feared once again." Jennifer Cordes captained the squad.

The Blue Devils, who finished 6-6 overall, were led by singles players Lana Ziegler (7-4), Nina Flores (6-5) and Kristen Walsh (8-4). "Lana was the most consistent player on the team," Mininni said. "She's very dedicated to the sport."

The coach called Flores "a quiet leader who has the great skills needed to become a fabulous tennis player." Walsh was the team's most improved player. "She came in and right from the beginning of camp, I knew this was going to be a great year for her," Mininni said.

The team's top doubles players included Hailey Giordano and Christine Simpson and Hannah Murphy and Suzy Petryk, who finished with a 9-3 record.

The core of the JV team is expected to strengthen the Blue Devil varsity for several years to come.
