Molly Prep's Poetry on HART Buses
Huntington High School sophomore Molly Prep's poetry will be splashed all over town after her work, "Leap," was one of a small group selected for display in the interior cabins of HART (Huntington Area Rapid Transit) buses.
Ms. Prep is enrolled in English 10 Honors and creative writing classes taught by Aimee Antorino. "Molly is an exceptional student," Mrs. Antorino said. "She is an absolute pleasure to teach. Molly is extremely hard working. When given an assignment, she puts forth 110 percent. She is a very talented and creative writer. I am extremely proud of her accomplishments in writing this year."
Ms. Prep and other exceptional high school poets were honored during an awards reception held at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Historic Site in Melville. She read her poem there along with other contest winners and local poets.
A panel of poets, local youth group leaders and members of the Town's Public Art Advisory Committee served as contest judges. Ms. Prep's poem, along with the other winning works, will be placed on 11x24" placards and fitted into HART bus advertising spaces. They will be displayed for at least one year.
"Leap" By Molly Prep I am a hunter. Aware of every cloud. Every bird. All that blue, so many shades of blue. I take a final silent breath and leap as high as far as powerfully as my body is capable of, and then some. I freeze at my climax, then begin my decent down to Earth. I land feet first, then hands. I leave proud. I hit my target. I walk away, with a piece of sky in hand. |
