Blue Devil Sports News
John McCarthy, a 6'4 Huntington High School junior, earned a spot on the Suffolk County Boys' Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-County team after a stellar season that saw him help lead the Blue Devil offense and excel academically in the classroom.
The teenager displayed a knack for connecting from the perimeter and sinking three-point baskets. He's also a solid ball handler and pulled down his share of rebounds.
McCarthy received a plaque to commemorate his Academic All-County selection.
Alum Completes Marathon
Katie Lee, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2003, is working at ESPN as associate manager of advertising sales systems. She graduated from New York University in May 2007 after a nice four-year run that saw her play on the varsity tennis team there.
Ms. Lee, who starred on the Blue Devil tennis, basketball and softball teams during high school, recently completed the New Jersey Marathon in a very respectable four hours, nine minutes. Her parents, Anne and Bob Lee, made the drive down to the Garden State to see their eldest child push herself along the 26.2 mile course.
Seniors Moving On
The Huntington girls' lacrosse team was dominated by underclassmen this spring. But, the Blue Devils did have some talented seniors in their midst, including Emilie Pugliese (High Point University), Sarah Ehrman (Stony Brook University), Emma Hayes-Hurley (Binghamton University) and Shea Scully (University of Bridgeport). Samantha Mohr, an important reserve goalie will also graduate next month and will be missed by teammates and coaches, alike.
Pugliese said that while one door is closing for the players another one is opening as they move on to college lacrosse. "We can't wait to get started," Pugliese said.
Boys' Soccer Alumni Game on June 11
The Huntington High School boys' soccer program is planning an alumni game at 12 noon on Saturday, June 11 on the synthetic turf field at Blue Devils Stadium. Huntington soccer alumni of all ages are invited to participate.
Blue Devil varsity head coach John Pagano has been actively contacting former players and spreading the word about the game. He hopes to reach as many alumni as possible.
This will mark the fourth year for the event, which the coach said has become a popular tradition. The Blue Devils reached the Suffolk playoffs last season and Pagano hopes a strong alumni group can help build the program
"All of our soccer alumni are welcome to play," Pagano said. "It will be great to get everyone together again. Anyone who wants to play should arrive early so they have time to warm-up." Alumni playing in the game are asked to make a $10 donation to the program.
To participate, former players should contact Pagano at jpagano@hufsd.edu.
