Blue Devil Crew Medals at State Championships

The Huntington High School crew team brought home silver and bronze medals from the New York State Scholastic Championship Regatta at Saratoga Springs as the Blue Devils collectively flexed their muscles for all to see.

Competing in a field consisting of 613 boats raced by 75 teams from across the state over the two-day championships, Huntington rowers more than held their own.

Blue Devil seniors Liam Dreusike and Ben Jensen won silver medals in the Boys' Senior Doubles event and Shayne Larkin and Mia Rienzo, also seniors, won bronze medals in the Girls' Senior Doubles event.

"Winning at the states this year was dreamlike," Ms. Larkin said. "Mia and I have always dreamed about getting state championship medals. We had been working hard all season long, but neither of us actually anticipated medaling! We surprised ourselves in the best way."

The championships were organized by the Saratoga Rowing Association. It marked the 14th consecutive year the prestigious competition has grown in size, according to Chris Chase, Saratoga's head coach.

Despite the field being especially tough and incredibly competitive, two other Huntington crew team boats advanced all the way to the semi-finals, which is no small achievement.

The Girls' Senior 4+ of Amber Lindner, Aliyah Cohen, Claire Beach, Pauline McGlone and Summer Rudish as coxswain and our Boys' Senior 4+ of Mike Serbanoiu, John Coffey, Steve Correll, Joey West and Holly Blakely as coxswain put a scare into their opponents.

A week earlier at the Long Island Scholastic Championship Regatta at Centre Island, the Blue Devils came home with silver medals as Amber Lindner and Nicole Caputo rowed the women's JV double to second place victory.
