Huntington Students Win Honors in Town Writing Contest
Five Huntington School District students were honored at this year's Huntington Youth Writes awards ceremony. The 12th annual writing competition was sponsored by Project Excel of the Huntington Youth Bureau-Youth Development Research Institute, Inc.
The competition drew over 1,200 entries spread across grades 4-12 from all public and private schools in the town. The award winning works will be published in a journal.
J. Taylor Finley Middle School student Charles Beers captured first place in the middle school division for his short story, "Parting Wish." Huntington High School students Laura Zenzerovich ("Beyond the Camouflage") and Kaitlin Millner ("An Angel Watching Over Me") finished first and third, respectively, in the high school essay category.
Huntington High School students Matthew Beeby and Daniel Moya won awards in the high school division for their short stories. Mr. Beeby finished second for his work, "Static." Mr. Moya earned honorable mention recognition for "Her Him."
Prior to publication of the award winning works, the students "participated in a writing workshop to fine tune their respective piece and prepare for a public reading," Huntington Principal Carmela Leonardi said.
