Huntington's AP Scholar Ranks
Inch Higher

Huntington High School's Advanced Placement Scholar ranks inched higher this year with 76 students being recognized for their fine performance on a series of challenging exams, one more than in 2010.

Huntington boasts 29 AP Scholars, 15 AP Scholars with Honor and 32 AP Scholars with Distinction. Among the group of honorees are six national AP Scholars.

To qualify as an AP Scholar, a student must score a 3 or higher on three Advanced Placement exams. Students must have an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more exams to earn the AP Scholar with Honor designation. To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction necessitates a minimum average grade of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more such tests.

"These results show what we've known for a long time: Our students are among the best in the country," Superintendent John J. Finello said. "Advanced Placement courses and exams are very demanding. They require a great deal of hard work, in-and-out of the classroom. It's really great that so many of our students are willing to take on the AP challenge and perform so well on the exams."

A tracking report compiled by Principal Carmela Leonardi indicates that while the number of AP Scholars dropped from 30 in 2010 to 29 this year, the number of AP Scholars with Honor and AP Scholars with Distinction both inched upward by one each, respectively.

Perhaps most impressive of all were the six Huntington students who earned National AP Scholar awards. To do so requires an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these difficult tests. In the previous five years the school has had 25 National AP Scholars after having just three from 2003 to 2006.
