Huntington Idol Crowns Champs
It was a fun, if not somewhat nerve-wracking experience for 20 Huntington Idol contestants at this year's finals in the Huntington High School auditorium.
Once the performers had given it their best shot and the judges weighed in, Stephanie Shea (high school), Kaiya Idler (middle school) and Declan Byrne (Best Entertainer) walked away as the competition's 2011 victors. They received gift certificates to Atlantis Marine World, air time on WBLI radio and "fabulous" trophies, said Lisa Leonardi, a Huntington High School music teacher who coordinated the event.
A sense of professionalism pervaded the finals from start to finish. "Many singers had outstanding stage presence and captured our undivided attention," Ms. Leonardi said. "The audience was appreciative of everyone and so enthusiastic. It was an exciting, energizing experience for everyone."
Guest performers included 2010 high school division winner Kristina Casale, high school choral director Veronica Mainville and Woodhull Intermediate School teachers Paul Esposito and Nicole Parrett. Mrs. Leonardi is putting the word out for other faculty members to sing on stage next spring.
The evening produced many exciting moments, included one by Mr. Byrne, who earned the Best Entertainer Award after he did a flip on stage during his performance.
Planning is underway for the 2012 Huntington Idol. The semi-finals are set for March 16 with the finals scheduled for April 13. All profits will benefit orchestra scholarships. Last year, Orchestra Parents for OOMPAH presented 17 orchestra scholarships to students in grades 4-12, thanks to Huntington Idol.
