Huntington Makes Waves in Environmental Poster Contest

A small group of Huntington High School science students made waves in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's ninth annual poster contest.

Huntington's Megan Hansen and Violet Murphy earned Top Five honors, finishing in second and third place, respectively. The contest, which focuses on "the importance of wastewater treatment," drew 247 entries from 25 schools across the state.

"It is great to see such cross-curriculum excitement, with students applying their artistic skills in the sciences," said Lori Kenny, a Huntington High School science teacher. Each of the students will be presented with a $25 check and engraved plague during a spring ceremony at the school.

Ms. Hansen is enrolled in a science class taught by Mrs. Kenny. Ms. Murphy is a student in one of science teacher Stacy Byrnes' classes. The two teenagers are bright and inquisitive.

The poster contest was co-sponsored by the New York Water Environment Assn. A final decision on Top Five placement was made during the NYWEA's winter meeting at Marriott Marquis last month. Conference attendees cast ballots after viewing the posters.

Information on the 10th annual poster contest will be available in October.
