Woodhull Goes Crazy for Reading
The Woodhull Intermediate School community has gone crazy for reading over the past three weeks. The school's PTA is encouraging parents and family members to read together with Woodhull students.
The Parents as Reading Partners program has a long history at the school. This year's campaign is focused on the theme, "Reading for Gumballs." The various academic teams at the school have been assigned a colored gumball. "For every 12 hours read by a team, a gumball is placed on our giant gumball machine in the hallway at Woodhull," explained Julie LaBella, Woodhull's PTA co-president. Students eagerly keep track of the standings each day.
PTA members are also tracking classes individually, noting the number of hours read each week during the four-week PARP initiative. The green and orange teams tied the first week before the green team pulled ahead in week two.
As the program nears the finish line, Sweeties Candy Cottage has offered to give participants a coupon that can be used towards an item in the store. The weekly winning team will also receive coupons.
