Coraor and Flores Earn Honors in Science Competition

Huntington's Juliana Coraor and Holly Flores were up for the challenge of competing against other intellectually high-powered teenagers in the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.
The two Huntington High School juniors worked tirelessly with their partners from other districts to advance in the highly regarded science contest.
Through many long nights of writing papers, creating PowerPoint presentations, designing posters and practicing oral presentations, Ms. Coraor and Ms. Flores made Huntington science history. Battling a exceptional field of more than 100 competitors, the teenagers walked away knowing "they did their best," said Lori Kenny, a Huntington teacher who heads the high school science research program.
Ms. Coraor captured second place in cell biology, earning a handsome plaque. She also garnered two specialty awards, including a certificate of achievement from the United States Air Force and a certificate of outstanding achievement for ability and creativity for in vitro biology from the Society for In Vitro Biology.
Ms. Flores earned honorable mention recognition in material sciences and left the competition with "a smile knowing she did her very best," Mrs. Kenny said.
"While both had hopes of making it into the International Science and Engineering Fair, their accomplishments as juniors are enormous and they have another opportunity at New York State Science and Engineering Fair in the coming month to vie for a spot," Mrs. Kenny said. "These girls are so very driven that they only strive to be the very best of the best. In my heart I feel they have already accomplished that and I know that the Huntington community would say the same."
