Southdown REACH Focuses
on Fingerprinting

Third grade REACH program classes at Southdown Primary School have been exploring "ideas and inventions" during science enrichment sessions, including a fascinating unit on fingerprints.

The students have worked in collaborative groups, as most scientists do, to produce carbon prints of their fingerprints. They recorded data, observed pattern groups, sorted and compared their prints and will eventually complete the unit of study with a "mystery print" investigation.

The Southdown classes are led by librarian Ellen Blanchard. "Each science unit involves reading from text, discussing new vocabulary, writing, problem solving, and research – connecting each specific lesson to language, math and science extensions of the curriculum," said Maryann Daly, SEARCH chairperson-teacher.

SEARCH (Scholastic Enrichment and Resource for the Children in Huntington) is multi-faceted with several different programs and events falling under its wide umbrella. REACH (Research and Enrichment Activities for the Children in Huntington) was specifically designed to provide hands-on learning activities.

"These REACH classes allow plenty of hands-on experience for each student, providing an enrichment experience for all children in the third grade," Mrs. Daly said. "This fingerprint unit of study also encourages a home-school connection as the students can continue to carry out their own investigation at home, using their family members' fingerprints."

REACH classes typically lead to an increase in reading and a thirst to learn more about the specific topics that are covered, according to Mrs. Daly.

Southdown Principal Michelle Marino has observed the third grade REACH classes "and is not quite sure who is enjoying the experience more, the students or Mrs. Blanchard," Mrs. Daly said.
