Race to the Top of Mount Skills
at Woodhull

Woodhull Intermediate School students will be competing in a different type of race every Monday morning for the next six weeks. It won't be held in the school gym or on the athletic fields, but it will nonetheless get the competitive juices flowing.

Woodhull reading teachers Karen Swanson, Dorene Karivalis and Marianne Fiordalisi are "very excited" about the race to the top of Mount Skills. This fun ELA skills competition to promote and practice English Language Arts skills kicked off on Monday, March 7. Over the next six week, a specific skill will be announced and the teams will compete against each other on Monday mornings by logging onto Survey Monkey. They will answer questions similar to those on the New York State English Language Arts test.

Woodhull art teacher Amanda Marino created a display of Mount Skills, complete with colorful climbers representing each fifth and sixth grade level team. Students can keep track of their progress throughout the six week competition by watching their team climber move towards the top of the mountain," Ms. Karivalis explained.

"The ELA skills that our students will be quizzed on are: figurative language, context clues, making inferences, finding main idea, fact and opinion, and cause and effect," Ms. Karivalis explained. "Good luck to all of our Woodhull climbers! We will see you at the top!"
