Donegan Wins Scholarship in Honor of Beloved Teacher

It isn't a stretch to believe that Robert Potter was applauding last week with the rest of the crowd gathered in the Huntington High School auditorium as senior Patrick Donegan was presented with a scholarship in memory of the beloved art teacher.

Mr. Potter passed away suddenly last fall in a crushing blow to his family, colleagues and students. The Associated Teachers of Huntington, the professional organization of the district's teachers, created a scholarship fund to honor Mr. Potter's memory. The ATH intends to award a $1,000 scholarship in each of the next ten years.

Mr. Donegan was a student in Mr. Potter's classes over the past four years. "Mr. Potter served as a role model and mentor for Patrick in many ways, both in and out of the classroom," said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. "Patrick created many wonderful pieces of sculpture in the program."

One of the teenager's sculptures, made in honor of Mr. Potter, earned an Award of Excellence in the Huntington Arts Council's High Arts Showcase. "When the art department discussed possible candidates for this year's Robert Potter Scholarship, everyone immediately thought of Patrick Donegan.  I know the award means a great deal to Patrick, who will never forget his beloved teacher."

The criteria for receiving the scholarship includes a displays ability to think creatively and to express their unique "voice" in their work, perseverance and growth in school work, willingness to challenge oneself and an ability to inspire others.
