Huntington Performances Inspire at Wreath-Laying Ceremony

The annual Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at Veteran's Plaza at Huntington Town Hall is always a solemn occasion. This year was no different. James Byler, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 2003, was the keynote speaker, offering words taken to heart by everyone in the crowd at the early morning event.
Mr. Byler, a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Marines, lost both of his legs and the pinky fingers on both hands last fall while on patrol with his unit in Afghanistan. The stirring two-hour event on the front lawn of Town Hall included performances by the Huntington High School chamber choir and brass ensemble.
Under the direction of Veronica Mainville, the chamber choir sang "two beautiful patriotic songs with impeccable harmonies," said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington's director of fine and performing arts. The brass ensemble turned out in full uniform and performed an original medley of Sousa marches written and directed by Jason Giachetti, especially for Lt. Byler.
"When the students were finished with their performance obligations, I excused them, but most students voluntarily stayed for another hour, interested in hearing what Lt. Byler and his father would say to all of the veterans and town dignitaries," Mrs. Fretz said. News 12 featured the ceremony, including the two performing groups, during its Sunday evening broadcasts.
One day later, marching band students from Huntington High School and J. Taylor Finley Middle School participated in the Memorial Day parade through the village.
"The music faculty, students and parents greatly appreciate the district's support of our music program and are proud to represent our schools at community events," Mrs. Fretz said. "I was equally proud of all of our Huntington High School and Finley Middle School band students who marched proudly in the Memorial Day parade. Our veterans speak often about the real purpose of Memorial Day and our students demonstrated their understanding."
