Eagle Scout Project
Lifts Choral Program

David Romar spent many hours in the Huntington High School choral room. So it isn't surprising that when it came time to select an Eagle Scout Award project, the teenager didn't stray from his comfort zone.
Mr. Romar graduated last month with Huntington's Class of 2011. His college plans are still unsettled. He might attend Nassau Community College in the fall or he could head down to Florida, where he hopes to attend the University of North Florida and study music education. Regardless what happens this fall, a move to Florida is definitely in the cards at some point.
Scouting has been a big part of Mr. Romar's life. His Eagle Scout project involved designing and building shelving for the choral program's extensive library of music, which had been stored in the school's basement and was suffering from the humid conditions there.
The Eagle Scout project required hours of fundraising to pay for needed supplies, meetings with Director of Fine and Performing Arts Joan Fretz and Director of Facilities Paul Rispoli, the preparation of reports for Boy Scouts officials and working with fellow Scouts and chorus members to complete the work.
"I really enjoyed working with David on his project," Mrs. Fretz said. "Music is his passion and he wanted to give back to the program. He was so prepared and professional at our meetings with district representatives and the project came out perfect! We are so touched by his hard work and contributions, which will serve our choral program for years to come."
Mr. Romar even moved the entire choral library upstairs and organized it by genre as part of the project. He also purchased a plaque to honor each choir director who has led the Huntington High School choir through the years. The plaque will feature the director's names and years of service.
When all was said and done, Mr. Romar had devoted 128 hours to the project. Coupled with the time of his fellow choir members and Boys Scouts and the project totaled 278 man hours.
Mrs. Fretz said a plaque recognizing Mr. Romar's efforts will be mounted in the chorus room.
