Southdown Springs into Summer

The Southdown Primary School community really knows how to spring into summer. Faculty, support staff and parents turned out to kick-off the summer season with a party at the Indian Hill Country Club in Northport
The event was organized by Kimberly Steinberg and a group of dedicated Southdown PTA volunteers. A crowd of about 100 attended the festive evening, which included 45 overflowing raffle baskets and grand prizes of tickets to Yankees and Mets games. There was even a putting green challenge with gift certificates to top area restaurants up for grabs.
"The food was amazing and the music and grounds provided such a wonderful backdrop for the event," Southdown Principal Michelle Marino said. Nothing was on the evening's agenda except fun.
The special event came about after plans for the traditional joint party with Jefferson and Woodhull schools failed to come together this year. Rather than fretting, the Southdown community went to work and developed what participants said was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
"With the new configuration, it was difficult to organize all of the schools," Mrs. Marino said. "When we learned that it would not take place this year, Kimberly took on the challenge of organizing an event for Southdown alone. She began in mid-March and made it happen! It was so well received we have already confirmed a date for next year!"
The PTA hasn't given up on the multi-school event. Efforts are underway to develop a get-together for next fall. There are also plans to continue Southdown's Spring into Summer party. Dawn Weir, Southdown PTA president, called the new event "a fabulous night. Kimberly and crew knocked it out of the park!"
