Blue Devils Win Kohl Tournament

119 lbs. Kohl Tournament Final Match Video - N. McNeil (Huntington) vs N. Oliveto (Suffern)

Kieran Mock was a happy man as he rode the bus home from Suffern High School last Saturday night. The Blue Devil head wrestling coach had just watched his team finish first in the Kohl tournament after three Huntington wrestlers captured weight class titles.

Nigel McNeil (119 lbs.), Thomas Wilson (152) and Louis Puca (171) all looked strong in the finals. McNeil topped Suffern's Nick Oliveto, 11-3. Wilson won an exciting 8-6 overtime decision over Henry Hudson's Phil Siegel. Puca pinned Monroe-Woodbury's Tom Sullivan in 3:44.

Duncan Murchison (189) also advanced to the finals, but he was pinned by Mahopac's Mike Spinelli in 1:53. Huntington's Ken Stropoli (3rd at 145), Luis Mendez (3rd at 160), Nick Lupi (3rd at 215), Corey Jamison (4th at 112) and Anthony Puca (4th at 285) also placed in the all-day competition.

McNeil looked especially impressive in winning his weight class. Coaches from the ten competing schools voted him the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

"This was another important step for us as we head to the league, county and state tournaments," Mock said. "We're healthy again and we are looking to finish the season strong."

Final team scores: 1. Huntington-149.5 points; 2. Monroe-Woodbury-130.5; 3. Warwick-124.5; 4. Suffern-115.5; 5. Mahopac-101; 6. Somers-91; 7. Port Jervis-89.5; 8. East Ramapo-42.5; 9. Henry Hudson-27.5; 10. Nyack-20.
