With many of its wrestlers sidelined, the Huntington the wrestling team lost to Hauppauge, 60-24. The Blue Devils forfeited eight weight classes, handing the Eagles 48 points. Huntington's Corey Jamison (1:23), Louis Puca (2:33) and Duncan Murchison (1:29) won their matches via pin. Nigel McNeil picked up a forfeit.
Great Effort by Blue Devils
The shorthanded Blue Devil boys' basketball team turned in a great effort against an aggressive Bellport team. Huntington dropped the contest, 71-55, but walked off the court with its head held high.
Down 20-6 after one quarter, the Blue Devils outscored their visitors 22-11 in the second frame. Trailing 31-17 at one point, Huntington went on a 15-0 run to claim the lead, 32-31. The swing of momentum electrified the crowd of about 200 fans in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.
John McCarthy led Huntington with 13 points, thanks in part to three 3-point baskets. PJ White added 11 points. Javon Robinson and Devon Nelson scored nine points each and guard Robert Hughes dropped in six points on two baskets from downtown.
Tyon Herion and Jack Cutrone scored four points and three points, respectively, for Huntington.
Schedules and Directions to Games
The Huntington School District's athletic office has schedules available for all sport teams as well as master schedules listing every contest on a day-by-day basis.
Parents, fans and alumni can stop by the athletic office located near the gym at Huntington High School, or call 673-2018 to secure a copy of the sports schedule of their choice. Admission is free to all home games.
Directions are also available so fans can find their way to away games. Those wanting to purchase a booklet of directions to all middle school and high schools in Suffolk County can do so for a nominal charge at the athletic office.
Schedules are also available on the Section XI web site at www.sectionxi.org. The Section XI site also contains results of games and up-to-date varsity team standings.
Double Overtime Loss
Jackie Waldron scored 20 points, but the Huntington girls' basketball team dropped a double-overtime verdict at Bellport, 55-52. The Blue Devils led 10-8 after one quarter and were ahead 24-15 at halftime. Then the tide turned as Bellport went on a 19-9 third quarter run to pull ahead by a point, 34-33. Waldron sent the game into an extra frame when she sunk a long three-point basket at the end of the fourth quarter to knot the score at 42-42.
Heather Forster and Raynisha Witherspoon each scored 11 points. Colleen Wright added six points. Sarah Ehrman and Emma Hayes-Hurley combined for four points.
Big Win for Wrestlers
The Huntington wrestling team roared to a 70-9 league dual meet victory last Friday afternoon in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.
Corey Jamison (2:57), Nigel McNeil (2:49), Tye Jamison (1:45), T.J. Wilson (3:43), Louis Puca (1:36), Duncan Murchison (0:33) and Nick Lupi (1:28) each pinned their opponents. John Arceri (8-7), Kevin Mendez (11-0) and Kenneth Stropoli (6-4) captured decisions.
The victory improved Huntington's overall dual meet record to 8-2.
Fencers Top Newfield
The Huntington boys' fencing team bested Newfield, 15-12. James Ferraiolo went 3-0 in epee and Joe Rizzi and Sean Harkins were 3-0 in foil to lead the Blue Devils.
The Huntington girls' fencing team topped Newfield 19-8 as Alexandra Martinolich went 3-0 in foil and Katia DeSimone went 3-0 in saber to pace the Blue Devils.
Waldron Drops 21
The Huntington girls' basketball team road Jackie Waldron's sharp shooting to victory, soaring past West Babylon, 47-31. Waldron scored 21 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had six steals.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 13-7 lead and extended the advantage by halftime, 24-17. Huntington finished the game on a 10-2 run. Raynisha Witherspoon scored nine points and Emma Hayes Hurley added six points and ten assists. Heather Forster, Lucinda Gulino and Katie Nugent combined for another five points.
Finley Winter I Sports
There are 64 students participating in the Winter I sports season at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. The eighth grade boys' basketball team has 19 members and the seventh grade boys' basketball squad features 16 players. The girls' volleyball team has a 29 player roster.
170 Points Scored
The Huntington boys' basketball team scored 73 points, but still lost the game as West Babylon remained undefeated in league play, topping the Blue Devils, 96-73.
Huntington trailed 51-35 at halftime as was down 72-53 after three quarters of play.
John Patron scored 23 points and PJ White added 20. Trevon Brown dropped in 12 points and John McCarthy connected for nine points. Jack Cutrone, Tyon Herion, JT Taylor and Robert Hughes combined for 11 points.
Second Half Troubles
The Huntington girls' basketball team played a strong first half last Saturday at John Glenn. The Blue Devils trailed 10-7 after one quarter before battling the Knights to an 11-11 second quarter stand-off.
Down 21-18 at halftime, Huntington saw its hopes dashed when John Glenn went on a 15-8 third quarter tear, followed by a 10-3 fourth quarter run.
Jackie Waldron led all Blue Devil scorers with 11 points. Courtney O'Bryan dropped in eight points and Raynisha Witherspoon added seven more.
