Blue Devil Girls' Fencers Sharp

At the halfway mark of the winter fencing season, the Huntington boys' and girls' teams are on "different tracks," according to head coach Alan Kuver. The girls' squad is flying high with a 5-2 mark through its first seven meets and is looking to solidify its position as the No. 2 team in Suffolk behind perennial power Ward Melville.

Last winter the girls' team finished the season with a 9-5 record and was second in the county tournament. Huntington is captained by seniors Olivia Weller, Dylan Tuozzo, and Mia Rienzo.

The saber squad consists of senior Dylan Tuozzo, junior Holly Flores, sophomores Katia DeSimone, Joey Tuozzo, Kelly Askerberg , Andrea Cerini, Melanie Grossman, freshmen Rachel Feltman, Nina Flores, Tara Purcell and seventh grader Irina DeSimone.

The foil squad features juniors Alexandra Martinolich and Marie Clifford, sophomores Maggie Askerberg, Taylor Choy, Marissa Pashkin, Melissa Rosenberg, freshmen Julie Gray, Brianna Kirkland, Sibilla Maiarelli and Alexandra Stahno and eighth grader Ruhi Shah.

The epee squad includes seniors Rebecca Deegan, Mia Rienzo and Olivia Weller, sophomores Carly Glowacky, Katelyn Postiglione, Anna Wertheim, freshmen Devin Dattolico, Elizabeth Eichenberger, Katherine Gerdes and Haley Miller.

Girls' Season Recap

• Ward Melville: Lost 22-5; Suffolk's perennial power handed Huntington its first loss. Olivia Weller won her first two matches of the season.

• Half Hallow Hills: Lost 16-11; Huntington suffered its second defeat of the season even as Olivia Weller improved her record to 4-0.

• Brentwood Holiday Tournament: Olivia Weller captured first place in women's Epee. Mia Rienzo was sixth in women's epee. Dylan Tuozzo was Huntington's top finisher in women's saber at 10the place and Maggie Askerberg was 19th in women's foil.

• Ward Melville Underclass Challenge: Sophomores Maggie Askerberg (10-2 in women's foil) and Carly Glowacky (15-1 in women's epee) took first place in their events. Sophomore Anna Wertheim (13-3) was second in women's epee. Sophomore Joey Tuozzo (11-3) tied for first in women's saber. Freshmen Sibilla Maiarelli earned first place in freshmen foil with an 8-2 record. Seventh grader Irina DeSimone went 13-4 record against eighth and ninth graders, winning her age group.

• Brentwood: Won 17-10; Huntington grabbed its first match of the season. Seniors Olivia Weller and Dylan Tuozzo were each 3-0. Sophomore Taylor Choy won the 14th and deciding bout in foil.

• Centereach: Won 15-12; Huntington evened its record at 2-2; Sophomore Maggie Askerberg went 3-0 in foil, wining 5-4 in her last bout to clinch the meet.

• Walt Whitman: Won 21-6; Huntington won its third straight match; Sophomore Joey Tuozzo went 2-0 in saber; Women's foil squad of junior Alexandra Martinolich, sophomore Maggie Askerberg and freshman Sibilla Maiarelli each went 2-0; Seniors Mia Rienzo (2-0) and Olivia Weller (3-0) were undefeated in epee; Weller's 5-0 victory in the second round of epee clinched the meet.

• Newfield: Won 16-11; Huntington won its fourth straight match; Junior Marie Clifford won 5-0 to clinch the meet.

• Concord Carlisle Invitational: Senior Olivia Weller went 25-0 while winning the women's epee; Carly Glowacky was awarded second place in women's epee; Sophomore Katia DeSimone finishes fourth in women's saber; Sophomore Maggie Askerberg finished third and teammate Junior Alexandra Martinolich placed fourth in women's foil action.

• Commack: Won 15-12; Huntington won its fifth straight match; Sophomore Maggie Askerberg went 3-0 in foil; Sophomore Carly Glowacky won her last bout 5-4 to clinch the meet; Senior Olivia Weller was 2-0 in epee, winning her 114th and 115th career matches for the Blue Devils; Wellers wins tied and passed former career wins leader Jean Hergenhan (Class of 2000), giving Weller the most career wins for the Blue Devil women's team.
