Books and More Books for Woodhull

The Woodhull School community loves books and students have a special fondness for reading. So, there was plenty to get excited about during the school's recent Scholastic Book Fair and a later book fair at Barnes & Noble in Melville.
The Scholastic event was organized to perfection by the Woodhull PTA. Every class in the building rotated through the fair, which was held in the library. Students enjoyed perusing a wide selection of materials. Proceeds from the event will be used by the PTA to support student-centered activities in coming months.
A second book fair at the Rte. 110 Barnes & Noble store proved to be a fun-filled evening complete with a slate of family activities. The event drew a crowd of students, parents, teachers and staff members. Teacher volunteers could be found working in the café serving food to participants, reading stories to the youngsters in attendance, coordinating band and orchestra ensembles and even performing themselves.
"The holidays were definitely in the air, as all enjoyed music and shopping at Barnes & Noble," parent Deborah Chin said. "Students who attended the event earned a 'no-homework' pass for one assignment."
Several teachers took leading roles over the course of the evening. Colleen Mahoney and Christine Amodeo read to the youngsters. Tara Adams, Christina Bhasin, and Chelsea Jablon coordinated and directed the band and orchestra ensembles. Patricia Hearn and Paula Gasparino served food and drinks in the café. Paul Esposito played his guitar and sang. Woodhull Principal Mary Stokkers even held a trivia contest.
Barnes and Noble donated a portion of its profits from the event to the Woodhull PTA to support other student initiatives.
