World Math Day at Woodhull School

Woodhull School math teachers Colleen Mahoney and Christine Barresi are "very excited" about World Math Day on March 1 and if their enthusiasm is contagious it's going to be a splendid event.
The two faculty members are asking students to gear up for the challenge of vying to become a World Math Day champion. The youngsters are being given user names and passwords to log onto www.worldmathday.com to practice and familiarize themselves with the game format. "The goal is easy: Answer as many questions as possible per game," Mrs. Mahoney said.
Based upon practice scores, the top ten students from Woodhull School will be invited to compete live during the school day during the March 1 World Math Day festivities. "All other students can also compete on World Math Day outside of school," Mrs. Barresi said.
Students will ultimately be competing live online against youngsters from across the globe, answering challenging "mental math" problems and hopefully having fun, too.
Each time one of the youngsters logs onto the event's website on March 1, a search engine will identify where other students are competing from at that moment. A hard copy of the world map will be placed on a bulletin board behind the computers being used so students can quickly find a country's location. The list is expected to grow throughout the day as more students log on.
Teachers hope the entire school participates in this year's World Math Day. The initiative is for all grade levels and age groups and attracts thousands of students from around the world. The event seeks to "unite the world in numbers,"
Students with questions are encouraged to stop and see Mrs. Barresi or Mrs. Mahoney. "Remember: Practice makes perfect," Mrs. Mahoney reminded students.
