Math Honor Society Inducts New Members

While math can be a very challenging subject for many students, the 22 new members of the local chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society at Huntington High School, have displayed a level of mastery that was celebrated during a recent ceremony in the school auditorium.

The honorees included Natalie Acton, Joey Adelman, Holly Blakely, Lauren Boyce, Laurelle Byrne-Cody, Phil Cadorette, Christian Carrion, Sarah Cerezo, Conner Davis, Jake Goldstein, Thomas Hardardt, Justin LoScalzo, Erik Marcinek, Alexandra Martinolich, Christopher Napolitano, Brittany Oliva, Samantha Palmer, Matthew Petryk, Michelle Rosenbauer, Nitika Shah, Dylan Tuozzo and Lauren Zenzerovich.

This year's festivities marked the 14th induction ceremony in the society's history. It included several speakers, including faculty advisor Monica Racz, who explained the purpose of the Math Honor Society and the responsibilities associated with membership. Parents and family members beamed throughout the event and math teachers dotted the audience. The honorees lit candles and as each was inducted, the auditorium lights gradually dimmed until the room was illuminated only by candlelight. It produced a dramatic effect. A small reception followed in the auditorium lobby.

"The ceremony was lovely," said Marybeth Robinette, district director of mathematics and testing. "I was so impressed by the achievements of these outstanding students and enjoyed the remarks made by President David Stillman." Former faculty advisor Doris Quintilian was presented with a special gift by the society in recognition of her many years of service.

The new inductees join continuing members Sami Aiman, Cristina Badalamenti, Michelle Byrne, Adam Cerini, Alyson Coleman, Juliana Coraor, Kaja Coraor, Amelia Eisen, Carolyn Fante, Mikah Feldman-Stein, Alexa Giammarino, Alexandra Kiley, Andrew Ku, Patrick O'Brien, Michael O'Connor, Mia Rienzo, Meghan Rowland, Nicholas Shivers and David Stillman.

To be eligible for membership in the math honor society, students must have successfully completed Math B or Algebra 2 Trigonometry, have a minimum un-weighted average of 90 in previous math courses and have at least an 85 average in their current math class.
