Hundreds Expected for Saturday Academy Classes
Hundreds of students are expected to attend the Huntington School District's Saturday Academy this weekend when it kicks-off at Huntington High School.
The district invited about 625 students spread across grades 3-8 to participate in the academic support program. Officials said on Monday they had already received confirmations from more than 300 parents that their children would be in attendance. The final enrollment is expected to be even higher. The academy is scheduled to run on nine Saturdays through April.
"Students who attend the program will receive one hour and fifteen minutes of instruction in reading and English Language Arts, which will include writing activities," said Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Jr., assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. "Students will also receive one hour and fifteen minutes of instruction in mathematics, as well."
The district is providing students with bus transportation to and from the program. Bus routes are posted on the district's website at www.hufsd.edu. Parents are asked to locate a stop nearest to their home for pick-up and drop-off. The estimated start times of the respective runs are outlined. If parents are picking up or dropping off their child from the program, they are required to sign them in and out at the security desk located inside the main entrance at the high school.
"The main goal of the program is to provide further academic support to students who met the basic standard (Level 2) in English Language Arts on the May 2010 New York State Assessment in grades 4-8," Dr. Card said. "Third graders were recommended by their building principal and classroom teacher for participation in the program. It is hoped that along with the regular classroom teacher's daily instruction, this additional targeted and focused support will help students who attend consistently to achieve proficiency on the upcoming ELA assessments and maintain proficiency well into their academic careers."
Nancy Wilson will serve as the program administrator. Angela Berner has been appointed to work as program coordinator.
