On a cold day, the Huntington boys' lacrosse team opened the season with a 9-4 loss at Eastport-South Manor. Blue Devil goalie John McGrath stopped 11 shots.
Huntington received goals from Dan Plant, Frank Caravetto, Will Coffey and Nick Saputo. Coffey and Jack Castelli each contributed an assist.
McGovern's Great Season
Kieran McGovern turned in a great season for the Huntington JV boys' basketball team. "Kieran has all the tools necessary to develop into a tremendous force on the varsity team in the years to come," Blue Devil coach Ed Lein said. "He exhibits a tremendous work ethic, excellent shooting ability and a lighting quick first step. He leads by example when it comes to determination and work ethic."
A sophomore, McGovern led Huntington in scoring.
Waldron Grabs Honors
Huntington High School senior Jackie Waldron was presented with All-League and All-Conference honors at the Suffolk Girls' Basketball Coaches Assn. dinner. Waldron is finalizing her college plans.
The fine shooting guard led Huntington in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game. She was 11th in Suffolk with 31 three-pointers. She even averaged 10 rebounds per game.
Overtime Loss for Girls' Lax
The Huntington girls' lacrosse team staged a dramatic second half comeback that sent the Blue Devils into overtime against Shoreham-Wading River before falling, 10-6.
Huntington trailed after one half of play, 4-1, but rallied in the second frame with five goals to knot the score at 6-6. However, SWR scored four unanswered overtime goals to lock-up the victory.
Huntington's Alexis Thompson scored three goals. Hannah Burnett and Colleen Wright also scored goals. Emma Hayes-Hurley scored a goal and added an assist. Emilie Pugliese pitched in with an assist. Anna Tesoriero stopped 15 SWR shots in goal.
Eighth Grader Scores
Kenny McCarthy is a talented eighth grader. "He proved that he belonged on this level," said Ed Lein, head coach of the Blue Devil JV boys' basketball team. McCarthy was the team's "sixth man" at the start of the season before becoming a starter three games into the campaign and never lost his spot. He earned a reputation as Huntington's best shooter.
"He has an innate knowledge of the game and is extremely coachable," Lein said. "His competitive drive is contagious and he will be a leader for the rest of his playing career."
Alumni Lax Game
Huntington High School's 26th annual alumni lacrosse game is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. in Blue Devil Stadium. There are plans for 9:30 a.m. varsity and junior varsity practice sessions. He Huntington Village Lacrosse league is expected to send a contingent of elementary grade level players to practice with the varsity team.
Growing Pains
The Huntington High School varsity boys' basketball team experienced growing pains this winter under new head coach Brad Reminick. The Blue Devils finished with a 6-11 overall record.
Huntington topped Jericho, 50-46, Commack, 61-57, St. Dominic's, 71-64, Comsewogue, 52-47 and Hauppauge twice, 58-54 and 64-55. Reminick was assisted by Tim Madden.
Birchard Develops
As the season progressed this past winter, sophomore Connor Birchard developed "extremely well," said Huntington JV boys' basketball coach Ed Lein. "He is solid at every aspect of the game and has a strong knowledge of fundamentals. His energy and leadership skills will enable him to excel in the years to come."
Castillo is Impressive
Alex Castillo leads by example. The Huntington High School freshman was a standout player on the junior varsity boys' basketball team this past winter. Coach Ed Lein said Castillo "has great leadership skills and a tremendous work ethic. I'm looking forward to his development as an all-around basketball player. He has great court sense and is extremely coachable."
Castillo can shoot, dribble, pass and play defense. "I have no doubt he will contribute greatly to the program in the years to come," Lein said.
