Science Research Team Competes
at Dowling

A love of science led a group of 13 Huntington High School science research program students to Dowling College's Rudolph-Oakdale campus to participate in the 2011 National Science Foundation's Noyce High School Science & Mathematics Symposium.
The event had a competitive segment to it, too. Christian DeFeo, Danny Touhey, William Hannon, Frank Yeh, Holly Flores, Rachel Bosco, Jason Chisolm, and Molly Prep comprised Huntington's competing team after their projects were accepted by organizers.
Research program students Andrea Cerini, Kaja Coraor, Holden Kata, Marissa Schedler, and Aryan Tafreshi were also on site and in attendance at a wide range of workshops and conferences, which took the study of the sciences to a new level.
The Huntington team members more than held their own against students from across Long Island. Throughout the day participants were given an opportunity to discuss their respective research projects with judges, scientists and other students who enjoy the sciences.
When the results were announced, Ms. Flores captured first place among all juniors in the competition and finished second overall for her insightful project. "All of our students represented Huntington High School with great pride and it is an honor to get to work with such compassionate and hardworking students," said Lori Kenny, the Huntington teacher who heads the high school science research program. "I walked away letting the kids know they were winners long before the awards were given out."
Huntington's participating projects included:
• How Much Energy Can Be Produced by Water Falling Down a Drain? By Christian DeFeo and Danny Tuohey.
• The Study of DEET vs. Natural Products on Drosophila Melanogaster. By William Hannon and Frank Yeh.
• Dental Pulp Stem Cell Growth and Differentiation on Various Polystyrene,
Polybutadiene, Poly(4-vinylpyridine) Copolymer Substrates. By Holly Flores.
• The Study of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in Adolescents. By Rachel Bosco.
• The Effects of Solar Panels on the Cost of Energy in a School Environment. By Jason Chisolm.
• The Effect of Cell Phone Radiation on Plant Growth. By Molly Prep.
