Huntington Duo Vies in
State Science Fair

Huntington High School junior Juliana Coraor and Holly Flores recently competed in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair at the New York Hall of Science in Queens.

Huntington teacher Lori Pyzocha-Kenny called the two teenagers "outstanding research students." The faculty member should know since she heads the high school science research program.

The state fair attracted many of the top science students. It's one of the leading competitions in the country and is a prelude to the international level science and engineering fair.

The Huntington juniors and their respective research partners presented their work at the fair to scientists from around the metropolitan area. "The girls practiced for weeks on their oral presentations and revised their scientific boards with their advising scientist," Mrs. Pyzocha-Kenny said. "The level of knowledge and skills in these young ladies is astounding."

At the conclusion of the first round, the Huntington contingent learned that Ms. Coraor had been chosen for the "lightening" round. "During this period of the competition the students were sequestered behind closed doors to present their work to a panel of judges for the final decisions of the top projects," Mrs. Pyzocha-Kenny said.

Following in the footsteps of her scientifically-accomplished brother, Everett, Ms. Coraor earned top honors in her respective category, bringing home a handsome first place trophy and an iPod Shuffle and $20 gift certificate.

"It was a great experience for both girls and since they are both juniors their hopes are to attend ISEF next year and make Huntington school community history," Mrs. Pyzocha-Kenny said.
