Spanish Class Enjoys NYC
Cultural Adventure

A Huntington High School Spanish class embarked on a cultural adventure to Manhattan, visiting the Spanish Repertory Theatre and enjoying a meal at Mexico Lindo, a popular restaurant.
The teenagers were excited throughout the journey. "They had a really fun time, said teacher Lorena Diaz. The group included 39 students as several chaperones, including Priscilla Ramirez, a Huntington graduate who is current a Spanish student teacher at the school.
The adventure began with a trip about the Long Island Railroad. As the train chugged along, many students played a variety of games with chaperone, Juana de la Rosa, Ms. Ramirez and a parent who accompanied the group.
"Once we got to Penn Station, students enjoyed a 30 minute walk to El Repertorio Español along the streets of New York City," Ms. Diaz said. The Spanish Repertory Theatre is located on E. 27th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenues.
The Huntington teenagers took in the play, "In the Times of the Butterflies." "We had studied the Dominican Republic's history and the dictatorship of Leonidas Trujillo from 1930-1961," Ms. Diaz said. "It was a wonderful experience. Students had the chance to compare what we had studied, to the actual play that was based on Julia Alvarez's book, En el tiempo de las mariposas."
Following the performance, the Huntington contingent visited Mexico Lindo, a restaurant on the corner of Second Avenue and 26th Street. It's been bringing New York City authentic Mexican cuisine since 1972.
"The trip was a success," Ms. Diaz said. "My students are excited to plan another field trip next year."
