Huntington Competes in College Science Fair

Once they hear the word "competition," Huntington High School science research program students get ready to intellectually rumble. A group of them recently participated in Molloy College's 9th Annual Science Fair in Rockville Centre.

The Huntington freshmen and sophomores enthusiastically prepared posters summarizing their research and displayed them at their fair, which was held on Molloy's campus. "The team of students got much praise from judges for their hard work and originality," said teacher Lori Pyzocha-Kenny, who heads Huntington's science research program.

That no one from Huntington captured a top award did nothing to dampen the experience, which was used as a developmental tool. "It helps to prepare the students for higher-level projects and to explore other topics of scientific research," Mrs. Pyzocha-Kenny said.

The Huntington students have been learning not only how to go about conducting scientific research and follow all protocols for it, but also how to present the results of it to their peers and discerning judges. That's where fairs like the one at Molloy have proved invaluable.

"Winning at the competition is not the goal," Mrs. Pyzocha-Kenny said. "Rather it is to have the opportunity to meet other students and scientists who have the same love for the sciences. Post-college scientists have similar fairs to help share new findings in their fields with no prizes attached to the discussions. Such opportunities are new for our school. Our students are highly competitive and enthusiastic."
