Blue Devil JV Tops Comsewogue, 12-7

For the first time in a long time the Huntington High School boys' junior varsity lacrosse team beat Comsewogue. The Blue Devils topped the Warriors, 12-7 in a fast moving game that featured a suffocating defense.

Sophomore attack Mike Albini notched three goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder John Vanderschuyt won 10 face-offs and scored three goals.

Freshmen Nick Arleo, Ben Kocis and Jeremy Gelb also scored goals. Huntington was methodical in its play and relentless in pursuing its attack. It didn't matter that the Blue Devils hadn't beaten Comsewogue in years, this was a new day and the team played with a sense of abandon.

Long pole midfielder Peter Goldsmith came up with five ground balls. Defensemen Mark Cimmetta, Mark Curley, Kieran McGovern and Matt Corcoran played "great defense" according to head coach Anthony Troffa. Freshman Christian Jamison also shined, protecting sophomore goalie Todd Colvin, who recorded 10 saves and added 10 successful clears.

Sophomore midfielders John Mallouk (one goal, four ground balls) and Josh Long (two goals and five ground balls) were also impressive in the victory. Freshman Nick Stern had a big game, too.

Blue Devil fans had to battle heavy traffic heading east to the Port Jefferson Station school. "It was worth the ride," Huntington parent Bob Colvin said. "It was a team win in many ways. The defense was oppressive - middie and defender alike did their jobs like never before."

One of Vanderschuyt's three goals came on a low underhand bullet. Mr. Colvin called it "one of his nastiest scores - just a rocket."

The Blue Devils hope the winning continues all spring.
